Alicante To Attract 15 Cruise Liners in June 2015

Alicante port authority says there are 15 cruise ships scheduled to arrive in Alicante between now and the end of June.

As this will bring thousands of tourists with each cruise, spending an average of 10 hours on dry land, in an attempt to ensure they stay in Alicante, city tourist chiefs will be vigorously promoting Alicante at berth ensuring passengers are aware of everything Alicante has to offer. Most of the cruise visitors are British, with UK tourists accounting for 63% of 2014’s total, followed by Americans at 20% and Germans at 9%.

Alicante Tourist Train

Alicante Tourist Chiefs have also launched a tourist train connecting the port with Alicante city so the passengers can travel easily from their cruise ship and Alicante city, with the aim of providing them with easy access to the centre of Alicante which they hope the cruise passengers will remain. In addition, train will also provide a tour of Alicante city centre and route itineraries will be made available to the cruise passengers and have been designed with two objectives – to give them easy access to both catering and trade establishments in Alicante, plus many local sites of interest. An additional benefit for Alicante is that the tourist train will enable the passengers to travel around Alicante with minimum impact on traffic said Alicante Mayor Miguel Valor, when he test rode the tourist train recently along with representatives of Sis Tours, who are one of the companies that are promoting this initiative.

Alicante Welcoming Cruise Ships

This new initiative will strengthen the Port of Alicante’s position amongst competitors who are vying for the trade from the new ships that are cruising around the Mediterranean. Passengers arriving on cruise ships are value to Alicante, with the average daily expenditure of each passenger valued at 75 euros per person per day. In addition there will be the considerable amount that the crews of these liners will spend in Alicante.

Juan Ferrer, the new chairman of the Port Authority in Alicante says that Alicante plans in 2015 to double the number of cruise passengers to an estimated 88,000 passengers who will arrive on 49 ships as opposed to 2014 where the number was 29 cruises with 34,583 passengers.
