Alicante Christmas Market | Alicante Holiday Villas

On Thursday 15th December 2016, at 18.00 the Christmas Market in Alicante will open in Plaza Gabriel Miró, under the huge ficus trees, with a live Nativity scene.

There will also be some 40 stalls displaying the crafts of 40 craftsmen and women, plus demonstrations of live music, jugglers, old crafts, children’s workshops and a miniature merry-go-round. Amata, the craft organisation which organise the market, make sure everything on the stalls is made by the people of the stalls – nothing is imported, nothing is made in factories.  The stalls will offer a huge variety of craftwork with wood carving, ceramics, fabric and leather bags, leather made to measure belts and shoes, candles and pretty painted stones.  Plus there will be all sorts of jewellery in semi-precious stones, silver, glass and even paper origami figurines.  So this is a great place for buying some last minute Christmas presents.

Alicante Christmas Market – Live Nativity Scene

As always, one of the main attractions of the Alicante Christmas Market is the live Nativity stall, however this year there is an additional touch – Joseph and Maria will be in the stable! Both earn a living with their skills as  Joseph is a talented carpenter and wood carver and Maria produces wool by using a spinning wheel.  Both of them will be hard at work while the Child sleeps quietly in His crib and seated next to them is the ‘Messenger’ to whom Spanish children will pass their wish list for what they hope the Three Kings will bring on 6th January (Twelfth Night). The Messenger is ably assisted by the storyteller who tells the children stories and sings songs.

Nearby on the stalls other people will be hard at work.  There is the smith, showing how nails were made in olden days, a sculptor working with stone, a book binder, a cordwainer and a potter with his wheel.  Visitors to the Alicante Christmas market can watch how the goods are made, and children can also use their own hands at one of the many workshops.

Alicante Christmas Market – Workshops

On the evening of Friday 16th December and all day Saturday (17th) and Sunday (18th) the potter will help children make their own clay pots and on the Saturday and Sunday they will be shown how to decorate Christmas biscuits.  On Friday and Monday (19th) morning there will be a large table full of materials at which children can make Christmas decorations for the Christmas tree and the baker will allow children to knead dough and make loaves to be baked in the huge wood-fired oven. Also for younger children there are puppets and wooden toys.

Alicante Christmas Market – Food

There is also plenty of food available at the Alicante Christmas market with stalls selling with turrón (the famous Spanish nougat), marmalade and honey, fig bread,  cheese and a large selection of toasted nuts and seeds.  There is also tavern selling beer and wine, a BBQ, a stall selling delicious filled pancakes and another selling Glühwein (hot spiced wine).  The Market is held in the Plaza Gabriel Miró in Alicante – usually known as the Plaza de Correos (or Post Office Square) because of the lovely Art Deco Post Office.

The Alicante Christmas Market opens Thursday 15th December at 18.00 and finishes on the evening of Monday 19th December. Opening hours from 11.00 – 14.00 and 17.00 – 21.00.
