Alicante-Elche airport has won a health and safety award for recognising their “Best Hygiene Measures” employed to reduce the chance of travellers catching Covid-19.

The Airports Council International (ACI) has awarded Alicante-Elche airport an award for their health measures against Covid-19, which have been implemented by Aena (the Spanish company that manages airports throughout Spain).

Alicante-Elche won the award for having “Best Hygiene Measures” in Europe and it was awarded based on the opinions of passengers collected in the surveys of the ASQ program (Airport Service Quality Program, Airport Service Quality). The ACI award reflects the opinion of passengers at Alicante-Elche airport, who valued the health controls at the airport. These controls included the reinforcement of cleaning and sanitation, mandatory mask wearing, reorganisation of passenger flows plus the use of signage to mark social distancing. Alicante-Elche airport put into place over 4,400 safety distance markers and more than 1,300 tapes at the terminal to ensure safe distancing of seats. In addition, 300 dispensers of hydroalcoholic hand gel and 180 contactless taps and soap dishes were also installed in the Airport’s toilets and 275 protective screens erected at customer service counters. As reported here earlier, Alicante-Elche airport is also introducing a PCR test facility in May this year where passengers will be able to pre-book a quick Covid test in departures and get a result within minutes.
Alicante-Elche airport isn’t short on awards having won “Best Airport in Europe – for its quality of service” for two consecutive years (2018 and 2019). Laura Navarro, Director of Alicante-Elche airport, said the award “was a great success” and added “This award encourages us to continue on this path and improve day by day.”
