On-site Covid-19 tests are scheduled to start in May 2021 for departing passengers.
Aena, the Spanish airport operator has announced that Alicante-Elche airport will be installing a laboratory, run by Eurofins Megalab, in the departure area for passengers to get rapid Covid-19 PCR tests. The tests will be done by prior reservation made either by phone or online and promise a quick result which travellers can then show to authorities in their destination country that proves they are clear of Coronavirus. Eurofins Megalab also have to tell the passengers how long they have to wait for their result, so they do not miss their flights.
Boarding cards and ID will have to be supplied to ensure non-travellers trying to book a test. The diagnostic facilities will provide quick PCR, antigenic and serological tests to detect both active infections and the presence of COVID-19 antibodies, and will have isolation areas for travellers awaiting their results. The tests will conform to all Ministry of Health rules and if anyone tests positive, then safety protocols will be activated. Aena has said that the low price pledge was a key factor in awarding the contract to Eurofins Megalabs. The laboratory will open in May and run for at least 6 months with an option to extend until 31st December 2021.
