Alicante has been confirmed as the final host city for the 2021 Ocean Race Europe.
The organisers of The Ocean Race Europe have confirmed that the event will visit Alicante, as the city is confirmed as the 4th and final host city of the competition, which will take place during May and June 2021. Alicante joins the start port of Lorient in France, Cascais, Portugal, and the host of the finish, Genova in Italy.
Alicante has a long history with The Ocean Race, as Alicante is home to the regatta Head Office and Museum at Alicante Marina and the port has been the start point of every race since 2008. Every 4 years, this major international event draws sailors and spectators to the province and this year’s event should prove to be a huge boost to the local economy. The Ocean Race Europe is a new event on the offshore sailing calendar, open to the one-design VO65 class and teams sailing in a fully-crewed configuration in the IMOCA 60s according to Spanish daily “El Periodic”.
Regatta Director Phil Lawrence said “We are delighted to bring The Ocean Race Europe to Alicante as it will allow fans of our port of departure to experience the flavour of the regattas before the round-the-world tour begins in October 2022.”
Johan Salen, Managing Director of The Ocean Race added “The headquarters offices in Alicante will be the epicentre of activity for both the management of The Ocean Race Europe regatta and the media operation, which adds to the fact that the city will be stopped on the route”.
And Antonio Rodes, General Director of ‘Sociedad Proyectos Temáticos’ of the Valencian Region (SPTCV) said “We are very excited that Alicante, the current headquarters of The Ocean Race and the home of The Ocean Race Museum, will host the penultimate stop of this new event, The Ocean Race Europe. The Ocean Race Europe will give continuity to the activities organised in Alicante. The new European race once again places Alicante in the framework of major international events, contributing to the future opportunities in attracting services and tourism and in the positive projection of the city in international media.”
The inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Europe in 2021 leads off a 10 year calendar of sailing activity. With the Alicante stage confirmed as the final piece of the course, the full schedule for The Ocean Race Europe, including the coastal regattas, will be released in the coming days.
The teams will race up to Alicante from Cascais on the second leg of the Race and will be hosted at the port of Alicante in mid June.
