Spain’s Mediterranean Diet Crowned Healthiest In The World

For the 3rd year in a row, the Mediterranean diet has been crowned the healthiest nutritional plan by a panel of doctors, nutritionists and fitness experts with its emphasis on plant-based foods, whole grains, lean protein and olive oil.

The benefits of the Med Diet include lowering the risks of diabetes and dementia with Spanish actress  Penelope Cruz even being a fan and she said this is how she reached her goal weight just 4 months in January 2011 after giving birth to her son Leo.

New research now also suggests that eating a Mediterranean diet could also help preserve kidney function in thousands of patients who have already had transplants with figures showing around a third of patients who receive a donor kidney lose function within a decade of the life-changing operation. However scientists have found following the fish and nut-heavy Mediterranean diet, and cutting back on red meat, may help keep the new kidney healthier for longer. Scientists at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands followed 632 kidney transplant patients for 5 years with Dr Antonio Gomes-Neto giving  participants a score between 0 and 9 as to how much they followed the Mediterranean diet and found that patients with a score of 7 had a 29% lower risk of kidney function decline plus a 32% lower risk of kidney failure.
