With December just around the corner, in means it’s time in Spain for the 2016 advert for the Spanish Christmas Lottery El Gordo) and, as usual, it’s a tear-jerker.
El Gordo – Spanish Christmas Lottery
Spaniards queue for many hours to buy tickets for the (El Gordo), or the Fat One as they call the Christmas lottery, which is the biggest in the world in terms of total payout and the release of the said advert is almost as big as the event itself. This year’s advertisement was created by Spanish film director Santiago Zannou, which tells a story of an elderly lady, Carmina, who mistakenly thinks she has won El Gordo. And, in true Christmas tear-jerker style, rather than letting her know she is mistaken, her family, town, the church, and even the local police construct an elaborate day of celebrations to keep the charade – and presumably her spirits – up. A great story with English subtitles.
