Travel Agents Cash In On Holidaymakers Fears By Pushing Up Prices

UK Travel Agents have been accused of preying on holidaymakers fears of terrorism by hiking prices by up to 15%.

Rent A Spanish Villa Rather Than A Hotel

Thomas Cook recently admitted that the average Spanish package holiday has risen 9% on last year and that a holiday this year for a family of four that cost £3,000 in 2016 will now rise by at least £300 – £400 and have been accused of cashing in on tourists fear of terror risk countries like Tunisia, Egypt  and Turkey. Thomas Cook said that a combination of hotel price inflation and increased air capacity has intensified competition for both mainland Spain and the Islands with Spanish hotels pushing up prices by as much as 15% as they cash in on families looking for safe haven holidays and that hoteliers have capitalised on the increased demand, not just from the UK but across Europe, Russia and beyond. Joel Brandon-Bravo, the Managing Director of the Travelzoo bookings website, said the expected price hike is not exclusive to Spain, holidaymakers are likely to see similar increases in package holidays to Portugal, Greece and Italy.

Uk Travel Agents Taking Advantage Of Peoples Fears

In contrast, Mark Smith, Managing Director of Alicante Holiday Villas said “We are acutely aware that there is more strain than ever on family finances and that a Spanish sunshine holiday is very important to many people. Increasing costs in Spain, the weakness of the Pound against the Euro and the uncertainty of the effect on the British economy of the triggering of Article 50 post Brexit made setting rates for 2017 extremely challenging. The majority of the properties we advertise have seen only a small increase in prices in line with inflation and some have not increased prices at all for this year, making a villa holiday much more attractive for families. We would urge businesses and individual holiday home owners to see the bigger picture and set rates that do not take advantage of people’s genuine fears of terrorism.”
