World’s Best And Most Expensive Ham Is From Spain

A Spanish jamon has been acknowledged as the best ham in the world.

Spanish Ham Is Named Worlds Best

At the Biofach Organic Trade Fair in Nuremberg, Germany a Spanish ham has just named the best in the world. This ham is made from the exceptionally rare Manchado de Jabugo pure breed pigs (there are fewer than 100 Manchado de Jabugo left) and farmed by Eduardo Donato, who has lived in Huelva, Spain, for the past 26 years. However, because of the rarity of the breed, Mr Donato sells just 80 ham legs a year, but at the incredible price of €4,100 per leg.

Senor Donato rejects the term “most expensive” and prefers his ham to be viewed as the “most valuable” because, he says the ham is the result of years of “patience, passion and pleasure”. Senor Donato’s Manchado de Jabugo’s are free to roam outdoors amongst the oak trees eating only acorns which have fallen on the ground and therefore the pigs are 100% organic. Whereas regular pigs are slaughtered between 14 and 18 months, Senor Donato allows the Manchado de Jabugo to live for 3 years to reach optimum size, and then allows the meat to be cured for 6 years – hence the beautiful flavour and texture.
