Spain Still The Cheapest For Self Catering Holidays

According to the Post Office Travel Money’s “Self Catering on a Shoestring” report, budget-conscious families will find their money still goes further in Spain this year.

Spain Cheapest For Self Catering Holidays

The report, which was conducted by holiday tour operator Cosmos, looked at average prices for everyday items in a weekly shop in 9 European resorts. The Spanish destinations surveyed which included the Costa Blanca, Majorca, Lanzarote and Menorca, were all found to be considerably cheaper than Corfu, Dalaman in Turkey, Limassol in Cyprus and Crete.

The chosen items in the weekly basket cost just £48.70 in the Costa Blanca, as opposed to Corfu (£74.74), Crete (£86.04), Dalaman (£87.60) and Limassol (£97.28) costing significantly more. In fact, the shopping basket in Limassol was nearly twice the price of the same items in the Costa Blanca.

Alicante Good Value For Holidays

There is an added bonus for families travelling to Alicante this summer in that whilst sterling is worth around 5% less against the Euro, the Post Office report found that prices have fallen around 20% since last year.

Furthermore, the Post Office Travel Money “Self Catering on a Shoestring” report additionally found that holidaying families could pay a lot more if shopping at a resort mini market rather than a larger supermarket. Which is good news for people travelling to Gran Alacant with Alicante Holiday Villas as there are several large supermarkets in Gran Alacant, including Supa Valu, Lidl, Mercadona, Consum and Max Co-op. The report further stated that in Alicante for example, supermarket shopping cut costs by between 23.5% – 36.1% with the largest saving in Alicante where the basket cost £76.18 in a mini market, but in a supermarket, they saved £27.48.

Buying food whilst on holiday was one of the biggest causes of overspending with 47% of parents admitting to this. 59% said eating out and 52% said buying drinks at bars also contributed to this. But by not taking advantage of shopping in the supermarkets may explain why other research conducted for the report found that while 78% of parents had taken a self catering holiday recently, with 49% of them doing so to cut costs, 52% went over their holiday spending budget with 21% overspending by £100 and 9% by over £200.

Therefore the best advice when on holiday in Alicante is to do a weekly shop in one of the many supermarkets in Gran Alacant. Buy your drinks there as well for when you go to the beach, rather than paying the beach bar prices. In addition, look for the very reasonably priced ‘menu del dia’ option in many of the restaurants in Alicante, where you can have a 3 course meal, drink, bread, coffee and salad for around 8 Euros.
