New Years Eve In Alicante

Alicante is a fantastic place to celebrate New Years Eve! Called Nochevieja (or old night) one of the best places to enjoy the midnight celebrations is in the Town Hall Square, (Plaza del Ayuntamiento), located at the end of the famous Explanada in Alicante.

Free to enter, the Square comes alive with drum bands and entertainment. Make sure you buy your lucky grapes to eat one for each of the 12 chimes that herald the New Year to ensure good luck for the coming year, drink your Spanish cava, dance the night away and watch the amazing firework displays at midnight.

Red Underwear On New Years Eve In Spain!

Also be sure to wear red underwear as this is thought by the Spanish to bring good luck if worn on New Years Eve in Spain! All over Spain in the shopping malls, stores and markets, you will find red underwear being sold in the run up to New Year. This Spanish tradition dates back to the Middle Ages when it was prohibited to wear red as it was associated with witchcraft, the devil and blood. But people would instead wear red underwear that could not be seen as they believed that red was a symbol of life during the dark winter months. 

Museo De Belenes

The Museo de Belenes (Museum of Nativity Scenes) is in the Old Town in Alicante, behind the Town Hall Square in the Plaza Quijano. In keeping with Spanish tradition, every Spanish home displays a nativity scene to celebrate the Three Kings arrival. The Museo de Belenes, where entry is free, explores the history behind the artistry used to create these great scenes.
