On 5th November 2011 at 14.00, the 2011/2012 Volvo Ocean Race starts from Alicante in the first leg of the competition to Cape Town (around 6500 nautical miles) – which they are expected to reach on 25 November, 25 days after leaving Alicante.
What Is The Volvo Ocean Race From Alicante?
The Volvo Ocean Race, which starts this year from Alicante, is the world’s toughest sailing fixture, an exceptional test of sporting and human endeavours featuring the best in the sailing world. It is a marathon across the oceans for over 8 months, taking in 4 oceans and 5 continents, pushing those taking part to the limits of their endurance. The finish will be in July 2012 in Galway, Ireland.
Volvo Ocean Race In Alicante
The events start in Alicante on 29th October 2011, with an in port race, followed by a Pro Am race in Alicante, the following day, before leaving Alicante on 5th November for the first leg of the mammoth adventure.
Volvo Ocean Race Village In Alicante
Alicante’s Race Village situated at Muelle 10 de Levante at Alicante’s port will open on 14th October until 5th November 2011, with more than a million visitors expected during this period. With an area of over 40,000m2 for sports and leisure, Alicante’s Race Village will have leisure areas and restaurants where visitors can enjoy varied programme of shows, entertainment, concerts, introductory sailing course and leisure activities. In the Alicante Race Village visitors will also have a grandstand view of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 and will be able to follow the course of the different coastal yacht races taking place in and around Alicante, plus a close-up of the teams taking part in the competition. One of the main attractions in the Race Village in Alicante, will be the Volvo Ocean Race Interactive Museum which is devoted to the history of transoceanic sailing and yacht racing and, as such, will have the most advanced technology where visitors can enjoy learning about sailing, science, plus life on board. The Volvo Ocean Race Interactive Museum will be open all year round in Alicante.
Activities At The Volvo Ocean Race Village In Alicante
Alicante will be turned into a place for fun for all the family during this time and will feature many attractions such as :
The Ride a 3 minute extreme sailing simulator that allows the experience of what it is like to sail across the waves at a speed of 25 knots on board a Volvo Open 70 yacht
The Grinding Challenge where you can test your strength pulling and tightening the sails and controlling the ropes on board a Volvo Open 70 yacht in the shortest time possible
The Dome a marquee complete with cinema and wrap-around sound showing life on board during the 8 minute experience.
3D Cinema built using nine 40ft containers with space for 80 people at a time and will be featuring a 10 minute film showing what it takes to win the Volvo Ocean Race.
Air-balls Large plastic bubbles for children allowing them to float over the water in the swimming pool!
