According to Eurostat (the EU statistics agency) in 2013 Spain overtook favourites France and Italy to top the tourism rankings with tourists staying an average of 5.1 nights in Spain.

The Spanish Government Agency Frontur said that in the period Jan-April 2014, Spain received 1.3 million more foreign visitors than in the same period in 2013. Spain was the most popular travel destination for holidaymakers from the UK, France and Portugal, and the 2nd most popular choice for holidaymakers from Italy, Ireland and Belgium. The number of German tourists visiting Spain was up 11% to 2.51 million, Spain welcomed 3.1 million British tourists (a rise of 6.5%) and 13% more Italians holidayed in Spain (0.87 million).

In 2013, as political unrest in Turkey and Egypt saw holidaymakers choose Spain for their annual holiday, Spain overtook China to become the world’s 3rd most popular destination for holidaymakers by receiving 60.6 million tourists.
